Democracy Tables Talk Voter Responsibility, Voting Rights

Democracy Tables hosted four events in the fall of 2020. On September 26th,  29th, and October 1st, virtual round tables drew in 75 participants, collectively, to discuss voting and voting rights. On October 4th, Democracy Tables hosted “Democracy Tables: You Asked!” via Facebook live. Experts in voting law and voter registration attended the session to address questions that arose during the virtual tables. Thirty participants joined the live session.

In response to the tables, one participant wrote, “I knew that I was going to vote. However, I never really considered the significance of encouraging others to do so. I always stood idly by when people said that they were not going to vote for whatever reason they stated. The dialogue not only allowed me to share my thoughts, but also hear the thoughts of others that considered democracy just as important. The duty we serve is not only to the process but to each other. I believe that was the true takeaway I got from the dialogue—that we were not voting for a person to hold a specific office but voting for policies that would affect those who surround us.”

Another participant shared, “I really enjoyed this! Conversations about politics and voting are something I typically avoid because I’m still educating myself. It was nice to talk and learn without feeling judged for not being as informed as other people.”
